How do I use AI to make a budget?

Help me build a simple monthly budget. Ask me one question at a time: my take-home income, my fixed bills, roughly what I spend on food and everyday things, any debts, and one savings goal.

Then lay out a budget in plain language with three categories: must-pay, everyday, and future. Show me one realistic adjustment I could make, not ten. Don't lecture me — if something looks tight, just tell me the tradeoff.

Budgeting tools assume you already know how to budget. A chatbot can meet you wherever you actually are — and it doesn’t judge the takeout line.

How to use it

  1. Copy the prompt into ChatGPT or Claude.
  2. Use round numbers; precision can come later. The goal is a picture, not an audit.
  3. Ask follow-ups the way you’d never ask a bank: “what does everyone else spend on groceries?”, “is this normal?”

One honest caution: a chatbot is good at structure and tradeoffs, not financial advice — and avoid sharing account numbers or anything you wouldn’t put in an email.
